Quotes for the week…

KangaBlabba Add a comment »

Ok so I have two wonderfull quotes this week, both involving the same asian.

The first one came on Wednesday - we were all up in the LGTBQ office and for some reason got on the subject of male pap-smears. Steven had no idea that these things were done so Ruben was telling him about it. Ruben was also on the phone (on hold) with his car mechanic.

So here’s how it plays out:

Steven: OH! We should all go get them (the anal pap-smears). Me: You just want to get poked by anything don’t you Steven? Ruben: Wait - You haven’t even had anal sex yet gasp Oh my GOD.

Cause you see - right as he said ‘anal sex’ the receptionist at the dealership went on the line, and quickly put him back on hold. Priceless.

The second one was this morning, after our Womens Studies class - Steven and I were walking out of class and he was telling me that another brother had called him at like 5:30/6:00 in the morning to see if he wanted to go get breakfast. Steven had just fallen asleep maybe a half hour before he got called. Here is how their conversation went:

Caller: Hey steven - you wanna go to IHOP and get breakfast!!?? Steven: NNnggggaaaahhhhhh what time is it? Caller: 5:30-6:00 - why? Steven: Its too early for English. click

Paradox

I find sometimes I say and do things which end up being wildly contradictory when I apply the thoughts to the normal processes of my existance.

For example: I refuse to see the movie RENT. I don’t watch American Idol, LOST, Survivor, Big Brother, 24 or any other show like that. Why? Because they are so popular.

Justification: If something is THAT popular it obviously has to be total crap, or lacking in Quality. Right?

We live in a society where Wal-Mart has the ability to dictate what happens in music, literature and art - because it has to be marketable at Wal-Mart, our great nations largest retailer. Change your lyrics, change your cover-art, change the content in your game. Wal-Mart’s morals dictate our lives. The giant yellow smiley face may as well represent the authority of the God figure, policing us and telling us what is right and what is wrong.

So now lets look at the Apple iPod. One could argue that owning an iPod is itself an act of the popular culture. An iPod is a mass-produced consumer electronic device. Millions of people own them. Some of those people may even use their iPod to watch episodes of LOST or Survivor. My iPod isn’t the kind that can play movies - but that really isn’t the point.

Does Quality exist on the scale that the iPod is produced on?

Is it possible if Wal-Mart sells iPods? Is it a moral treason to purchase a product that is sold in Wal-Mart stores even if you don’t purchase that object from Wal-Mart?

Tonight I went to an end-of-the-year awards ceremony that was co-sponsored by the ASU student led LGTBQ Coalition and the ASU faculty, staff coalition Ubiquity.  It was a very nice event held at the University Club which is a kind of on-campus country-club type environment usually used by wealthy donors.  I was asked to say a little something about Sigma Phi Beta which I think I really sucked at since it was all very last-minute for me and I really didn’t know what to say!  Awards were given out by both groups and it was a really nice opportunity to meet and be seen by the politically/socially active LGTBQ community members.

Jeremy about lost it when Dr. Corey was speaking since Jeremy has a bit of a crush on the man.  Especially since Dr. Corey referenced Michel Foucault during a lecture he was giving our Intro to LGTBQ studies class.

So now I am back at home writing my little three-page paper on Robert Mapplethorpe.  Its quite a lot of fun and I may actually end up reading the entire official biography on him even after I hand in the paper.

Today I have listened to the new TOOL song - Vicarious.  So far it is settling well on me.

Even better, they are coming to Gammage on May 6th.  That’s like, less than two miles from my house.

I was walking from the union to the library today when there was a nice gust of wind.  This gust of wind picked up the Anti-Abortion peoples tent and blew it across the square.  As they chased the tent, some of their flyers and materials started to blow off of their table.

It quite amused me.

Windy Wind Down

Friday was a pretty relaxing day. Both classes got out early (yay!) and I managed to get a LOT of stuff done too.

I have a paper that is due on Thursday for my photo history class. I’m doing it on Robert Mapplethorpe (wiki). Due to his nature as a somewhat controversial photographer all but ONE book on the main ASU campus was in the library Special Collections. This is very inconvenient - these books aren’t in circulation which means you have to have someone get them for you. Then you sit in a room with a camera on you. Grr. Anywho - I got lots of nice information so I’m excited about this paper (!??!)

It was terribly windy on friday in Arizona (Aimee in Flagstaff said it was windy up in her area too). The air was saturated with dust and debris.. so bad that you couldn’t even see the few stars in the sky that you can still see because of PHX light pollution. The moon had a huge haze around it. Of course the terrible part of the wind was the fact that it was blowing THE WRONG WAY for me when I was biking home from campus. I was heading south and it was heading north. It is NOT fun to bike head-on into monsoon like winds.  Even worse was all the dirt in the air - it was so thick I could feel it on my teeth.. yuck.  Every time I went over a cross-street and the wind blew I got a nice sand-blast to the face from the dirt on the streets as well.  sigh

Later in the evening Jimmy and I went to Target to buy supplies for National Day of Silence - I had twelve 12-packs of soda, five 24 packs of water and other assorted sundries.  My poor MINI was loaded down!  But we had fun.  I took my Mammoth Bunnywith Tentacles around with me and Jimmy was just beside himself that I, a 28 year old man, was carrying around such a goofy looking stuffed animal in the car with me.  I was nice and didn’t take it into any of the stores to further embarrass him.  I probably should have.
