Summer Movie: Day Watch

Ooohhh. Day Watch opened, as promised, in Tempe last night and we went to the 7:20 showing. It was, in a word, amazing. There was a brief synopsis at the beginning to catch up those people who hadn’t seen Night Watch yet, or hadn’t seen it in a while (of course Emitt and I watched it the night before on DVD.. hehe). Normally I dislike a re-cap but since some n00bs came a long and hadn’t seen the first one, it kinda helped get them in the right frame of mind. The pace of Day Watch was just as good as Night Watch which kept the 2 1/2 hour movie rolling. I didn’t think it seemed like that long of a movie, but I was totally engrossed with what was taking place on screen to worry about time differences.

I had originally read that the movie was loosely based on the second and third stories of the book Night Watch. I can safely say at this point that a few things were borrowed from it, but for the most part this movie is an entirely different story than the second and third parts of the book. Normally when a movie is loosely based on a book, it sucks completely (see: Eragon). But this was nice :) There were some strange moments that left many of us wondering what the hell was going on, but I think that those are largely cultural contexts that we’re missing simply because we don’t speak or read the Russian language.

I rate this movie a full 5 kitties.
